{denver} art around town

April 20, 2012

One of the things I really appreciate about cities is their public art programs. Denver has quite a few statues and sculptures on display right on the street including the incredibly huge “The Dancers” in front of the Denver Performing Arts Complex. It’s not just a ginormous sculpture though, in fact, speakers surrounding the 25-ton steel and fiberglass figures continuously blast the song “Let’s Dance”.

Aside from all the colorful graffeti, I think my favorite out of all the free art I saw on the street (mostly along the 16th Street Mall) was the herd of colorful metal Buffalo lined up outside Market Station.

An artfully Denver photo adventure:

Dude you should check out some of the other great public art in Denver — the giant blue bear (convention center), the scary stallion on the way to the airport (which actually killed the guy who made it…no joke), the giant broom (downtown), and my personal favorite, the tiny palomino on a big red chair (on Bannock St).

  26. GREAT pictures! I have a blog on WordPress @ heatcubreporter.com. Hope to go to Denver one day

  27. Wow, those are really cool! I love me some MoDeRn ArT!!

I love your photo of the dancers looking up at them! I like the wee wall mural too, very funky and cute :)

  49. I don’t see that much art in the streets from where I live, that’s why I’m always fascinated by cities who never fail to look artistic. Maybe the people there are so used to it that they don’t really notice it that much anymore, I’m not sure.

BTW, you take really good pictures. I love every one of them. :) It really showed your admiration for the art found in the city and it made us admire the city too, even if some of haven’t been personally there yet. :)

    • allisence said

Thanks for your nice words! I totally agree. I think often times when we live in places for a long time or in our “own city” we don’t open our eyes and look around at all the art around us and truly admire where we live!

      • Yes. I’ve met some people who came from places with great art etc and when I tell them how lucky they must have been to be there and see it often, they’d just tell me they don’t really see it in that way. If I were in their place, I’d appreciate it all the more and be proud of it. :)

  50. Lovely pics :) loving the mural the characters are so cute!!!! :) great post keep blogging!!! ;)

  51. The angles and perspective of the photography is fantastic!

  52. Wow nice mural painting! The rest of the art is also very interesting

  53. The Mural painting is so awesome…i love the chess pieces and the children on stilts….Really great stuff

I was in Denver and Peublo two years ago…I still have yet to post some pictures, but now I really feel compelled to. They do have some marvelously artful public spaces.

    Thanks for sharing.

  55. You are right, this is what makes Denver so great! On future outings, make sure to capture the Blue Bear at the Convention Center! And thank you in advance for not taking a pic of the blue horse at the airport! Seriously, that sculpture is as horrific as the tragic story behind how it was made. Suffice to say, it was a sacrifice. Thanks for sharing your view of our town!

  56. Congrats on being FP – I live in Denver at the moment and do lots of shots around town and many food reviews. If you are here for a bit longer I would be glad to suggest some great stuff. In fact here you go. I just made this list yesterday :-) I hope to see you around

    Coffee-
    1. Crema 2862 Larimer (downtown-ish) best coffee and coffee shop food in the city. Killer if a bit overrun with “walkers” (hipsters)
    2. Happy Coffee – 1 South Broaway (opening soon and I have been to a preview) This place will do it right

    Sushi
    1. Sushi Den Denver 14?? South Pearl – A top 10 sushi experience in America – sit at the bar ask for Yasu or Toshi (owners) blow off the kitchen food and go for the fish only)

    Asian
    1. Cholon Bistro (blake street downtown) – may be best restaurant in Denver. Chef Lon Symensma’s shrine to the Singapore scene. Healthy, small plates, killer sake, and top flight people watching along with knockout food
    2. Pho Duy – (Federal Blvd) best Pho I have had in USA (this coming from a serious Vietnam geek)
    3. Lao Wang Noodle House – same shopping center as Pho Duy- best soup dumplings in city. slow service and not cheap but world class food

People Watching – plenty of douchery but great joints
    1. Linger (highlands near DT) – Happy hour and sunset view of city is unmatched. Small plates of street foods arranged by Geography..killer small and affordable wine list
    2. Euclid Hall – killer take on gastropub..awesome beers and great downtown location. This is a Denver staple
    3. Falling Rock Tap House – best array of taps in the city
    4. Wynkoop Brewing – the traditional Denver brew pub…great DT location
5, The Cheeky Monk – Belgian Ale House on Colfax – best fries in the city and wonderful Beligians on tap and bottle
    6. El Camino – some solid New Mexican style cuisine and easily best Margaritas in the city
    7. Pinche Tacos – (not kidding) upscale tacos and tequila bar..fun place and part of town

    Great Food
    1. Bittersweet – a remodeled gas station with really excellent food and nice wine list (best $100 meal in town)
    2. The Kitchen – a Boulder transplant and a killer wine on tap program (killer and I mean killer brunch)
    3. (Boulder) If you want to drive and if you can, you should – Frasca – easily the finest restaurant in Colorado. One of the top Italian restaurants in America and one of the most amazing wine lists. Worth the drive (seriously expensive..like NYC but incredible)

Let me know if you have any questions at all or if you need some more casual joints. I think most of these are not overpriced and most have lunch as well.
For breakfast people eat lots of Breakfast burritos (Huge and with Green chili)

  57. Oh my God, I’m really impressed.
