{boston} founding father’s brew
January 7, 2013
Welcome to Boston! Over Christmas break, my friends and I went on trip to the East Coast, namely Boston and New York City. It was great fun! The Boston portion of the trip was filled with lots of history while the NYC portion was filled with lots of food.
One thing we could not miss out on in Boston, though, was the Samuel Adams Brewery tour. Even though I lived in Boston for 18 years, I never went on this free brewery tour until now. I never realized how tiny their brewery so it’s a good thing they have two other locations in Pennsylvania and Cincinnati. This Jamaica Plains property is the only one that allows tours though. All the beer brewed here is used for competitions, sent to local accounts, and to fill our tour cups. This location is also the one that produces experimental batches. We also got to keep our tasting glasses!
Did you know the Boston Beer Company was started in 1984 when Jim Koch decided he was simply traveling too much for work? One day when he was at home, his wife told his daughter that her dad wanted to talk to her. Instead of turning around and looking for him, she immediately went to the phone and picked up the receiver. This is when Koch decided he needed to make a change. He went to his dad and got the original German lager recipe, which is still the one used for making Boston Lager today … and the rest is history. I find it most interesting that this beer company is so young. I forever thought that a beer named Samuel Adams would be at least 100 years old!
