{boston} smokey holocaust memories

Even though this Holocaust Memorial is not technically a stop on the Freedom Trail, it’s so close that it might as well be. It makes sense that it’s not though since it’s not a historical Boston location. What I like best about this memorial though two-fold: first of all, I enjoy the etched glass and smoke effect; second of all, I love the quote engraved at the end of the line of glass towers.

“They came first for the communist,
and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew.
Then they came for the trade unionist,
and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn’t speak up because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me,
and by that time no one was left to speak up.”

— Martin Niemoeller, Lutheran Pastor
