{phx} la santisima’s tacos

April 29, 2015

At some point, La Condesa Gourmet Taco Shop became La Santisima Gourmet Taco Shop. I’m not exactly sure when this change happened, but I do remember going to La Condesa a few years back. I do remember La Condesa’s bright salsa bar, which continues to this day at La Santisima. I, however, don’t remember the place being quite so tiny. Perhaps last time I had arrived during off hours because we got there just in time for dinner the other night and the place was packed! We wait outside for approximately 45 minutes before being seated at a tiny corner table. No complaints though because even though the place was super crowded (every available space was crammed with tables and chairs) and some of the salsas running low, the food was absolutely delicious.

It just so happened that near the end of our meal, the place emptied out a little bit so we had a bit of room to breathe, but I have no idea what I would pick as my favorite bite of the night. First we started with the chips and we tried six different salsas from the salsa bar. We also ordered their famous horchata that’s infused with fruit (mainly strawberries that night) and pecans. Next, our main meals came out: a giant Sonora-style Carne Asada Burro and an even bigger Gaucho-style Quesa. At La Santisima, quesas are traditionally made with corn tortillas, but then thrown into the deep fryer until it puffs up and becomes that much more delicious. What a meal!
