{portland} square for pioneers

August 22, 2015

Also located in Downtown Portland is its Pioneer Square. Seattle has a Pioneer Square, too. I wonder if Pioneer Squares are just the Pacific Northwest’s version of a town square. Perhaps because those who made the original trek from back East were pioneers? Anyway, Portland’s Pioneer Square is not its historic district (like in Seattle). Really, it’s just a huge city block that boasts a rather impressive tourist center, the courthouse, lots of steps for sitting around on, and a sign that tells you how far away every place in the world (or not quite) are. For example, even Walden Pond, located in Concord, Mass., which I have actually been to on a sixth grade biking field trip and former home of Henry David Thoreau, is on the sign. How strange.
