[good reads] martin’s big words

February 14, 2016

goodreads-martinEven though today is not Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, I feel like this is the perfect book to share today. Martin’s Big Words by Doreen Rappaport, is a children-friendly biography about MLK’s life. In it, the author shared how Martin stressed love even when everyone else focused on hate.

Seeing that today is Valentine’s Day, I thought that the message of love (even though he was brutally murdered) is fitting because MLK loved and helped those who needed it. He wanted to fight with words instead of hands. This is even a message that my students were able to understand. We help others and everyone is able to do great things. This is especially important for my students to understand because many, many people will underestimate them and not treat them equally throughout their lives and they are the ones that will need to stand up and fight for themselves, just like the movement MLK led!
