{penang} mansion that’s blue

July 30, 2016

The Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion is famous in George Town, Penang, Malaysia. For tourists like me, you know you want to visit this place not necessarily because you are aware of its hostorical significance but because it’s known for being blue! I mean, where else can you find a mansion that’s blue? And when I say blue, I really mean blue!

This amazingly indigo blue mansion was built in the 1880s by the merchant Cheong Fatt Tze. Even though the friend I was traveling with in Penang has been to the island many, many times, he had never visited the blue mansion either so we decided to take the opportunity and squeeze ourselves into the English tour. Wow did the tour woman know a lot not only about the history of the house but the entire island! It was seriously a history class in its own right. Of course, now thinking back about it, I don’t remember a whole lot of what she shared, just that the mansion was built incredibly smart and that the water system was quite sophisticated for its time. Even though parts of the mansion have now been converted into a bed and breakfast and other parts of it are for sure off limits resulting in only limited visiting space, there was still lots of history to take in! Totally worth the visit!
