{maui} volcano sunrise

July 31, 2017

Happy Birthday Erjie!

One of the most famous things to do while on the Island of Maui is drive up to the summit of Haleakala Volcano so very early that you can witness the sunrise in the freezing cold! Of course we planned to do this as well and it’s a good thing we planned it because now you have to make reservations on the national parks website. It used to be (before this spring) that any number of cars were allowed up. Now they only allow a certain number up each morning to witness the sunrise! It so happened that I found out about this right before leaving and got us a spot (even if it was the last one).

In the dark, you drive up the volcano and can’t really tell that you’re driving up the side of a volcano. You get to the top and assemble in warm clothing (and blankets) while awaiting the rising of the sun. As it rises, members of the National Park Service who are Native Hawaiians sing a special song/chant to share with the crowd. It’s a beautiful sight!

My friend (whose aunt lives on Maui) tells me that sunset is just as beautiful and perhaps more beautiful because it’s minus the crowds!
